Liberty Purse

I seem to be starting so many of my posts these days with 'do you remember when...' and then harking back to some long lost project or unfinished bit of crafty business.  And I used to be such a monogamous and linear crafter.... oh well.

Today, as you'll have gathered, is also about a long lost project.  This one I started way back last year by making lots of itty bitty hexagons.  The idea was that were to come together to make the sides of a cute little purse that I saw on Kristyne's site, Pretty by Hand.  Isn't it just adorable?  Everything Kristyne makes is just immaculate and this was no exception.

I loved it so much that I had to give it a try, even though I was a little bit afraid that my sewing skills wouldn't be up to the job because it all looked a bit complex.  Thankfully for me, Kristyne's pattern outlined everything so clearly and guided me step by step through the whole process so beautifully that I did manage to make it and I didn't really have any trouble about it either.  I have to say I'm very impressed with her pattern, I didn't think I had it in me!

The only thing I do wish I'd done differently is maybe not make the entire thing from Liberty fabrics.  As gorgeous as they are, they are a fabric with a fair amount of drape and therefore not the most robust for a purse.  I didn't think about that though, I just rushed in wanting to use the pretties.  I do love the Liberty hexagons and how the how thing looks but I think I should of used some of my other cotton fabrics for the inner pieces, pockets and so on.  At least I'll know for next time.

  1. Pretty clutch. You can still use all Liberty fabrics next time, just line with some interfacing.

  2. Oh I love it but then I love everything you do. And I adore anything with hexies. And I definitely agree that Krystine's projects are all very immaculate. That was a good adjective to use and one I had not thought of. How tiny are those hexies anyway?

  3. This is just gorgeous! So I guess I need to learn to sew now! But first things first, I need to learn to knit first! Been crocheting since I was a little girl but now all you crafters are encouraging me to do more! Love it!

  6. Very pretty. I might have to buy the pattern. I've been unsure before because the photos on the site are not very close up or clear and the pattern is quite expensive. I love the fabrics you have chosen and it looks a very useful wallet to have. I love the inside too, it's equally as gorgeous as the outside.

  7. It's lovely! I've just been cutting tiny hexies from naturally dyed silk, no idea yet what I'll do with them though!

  10. Such a pretty purse Sandra, I love it! Have you ever seen/heard of the iron-on vinyl? Just wondering if it would help to protect/strengthen the fabric, although it might not sit too well with your beautiful french knots?!

  13. Sandra, I'm just dying here. I don't even know what to say! Your wallet is absolutely s.t.u.n.n.i.n.g! Oh my goodness you have just put the biggest smile in my heart. :) What an honour for me that you not only made one of my designs, but you used all that luxurious Liberty ... and your execution is spot on. I am just so happy! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the joy of seeing my pattern come to life by the hands of someone I deeply admire. big hugs to you, k

  14. Wow so pretty Sandra, those hexies are tiny! I love your purse and you've made such a good job of making it. You have reminded me of an old WIP I've got using hexies made in Liberty prints - a sewing machine cover. One day it will be finished :0) Sam xxx

  17. Thanks so much! Yes, Kristyne is a master isn’t she? I’m in complete awe of her work I have to say! Thos hexes were pretty tiny though, only about 1/2” along one side I’d say. You need good eyes for them, that’s for sure!
PS I know you asked me about my sampler blanket, I haven’t forgotten I promise, just really behind on my replies (as usual!) I’ll try and get back to you this week though…

  19. Well, I can certainly recommend the pattern if you’re thinking of it. As I say, it was very clear and there are plenty of photos to show each stage and each step is explained clearly. I’ve never made anything from a brought sewing pattern before, apart from Alicia Paula’s bunny pattern so I don’t have any experience to draw on in that department. I could follow along with this ok though. Not that I’m trying to convince you or anything, just sometimes it’s nice to know what sort of thing to expect before you buy so hopefully this might help. :)

  20. Sounds lovely, although amazingly delicate to work with I would imagine? I’m sure you;ll come up with a great plan for them though.

  21. Not sure, I’ve got some iron on interfacing type thing by vislene I think? I did use some of that, but again I only had a very light version so although it helped I perhaps need something just I little more robust. The french knots are ok though, because they have a quilted back. I think it’ll be okay if I treat it with care, it’s just not going to be my every day purse, I’ll save it for slightly more special occasions I think. :)

  22. Aw, Kristyne you’ve completely made my day, you really have! Thank you so much and thank you for such a wonderfully well written pattern too, I most certainly am not capable of making anything that complicated and pretty without your guidance so that’s all down to your hard work and skill with a doubt. I know I’ll never be up to your wonderful standard, I just don’t sew enough for one thing, but you’ve certainly made me raise my game! Oh this is turning into a bit of a love-in isn’t it? But I do really admire you work, so I had to say so! :)
I’m on a roll now though, I want to make one of your pretty pouches next, especially since I saw the flat version on your blog the other day, too cute!

  28. lol! I’m sorry "Grammar Nazi”! You are completely correct of course. I’m afraid I’m not the best speller and rubbish at grammar too - not a great set of traits for a blogger really! Volunteer editor? ;)
I do always remember your and you’re though - I like to think that’s something.

  29. It is beautiful! I can understand why you were so keen to use the fabrics, and if you do find that it is too flimsy, as you say, you can always have fun making another one!! xx

  35. A dream of a purse! And I shall now be dreaming of one for my very own. It is so beautiful. I had fun with some small hexies though rather unglamerously they were used to cover a knee hole in my jeans

  36. I think that’s a great use of hexies! And you get to see them a lot, which is always good :)

  37. Oh....I do love this, I really do. I have an oil cloth Orla Kiely wallet which I love as it's so practical but this is so pretty! To hell with practical when you have aLiberty patchwork Purse! It's so summery too. I am often drawn to more floaty, floral fabrics and patterns in the summer and this is delightful. x
